Oxide glazed circular tray.

Ania Melner’s work responds to the excess of overdecorated and overly complex ceramic forms, embracing simplicity and authenticity. Her pieces exude a sense of spontaneity, with visible finger imprints, tool marks, brush strokes, and exposed stoneware that emphasise their handmade quality and humble form.

The primary structures are built using slab and coil techniques, while the wooden-like handles are modelled after real wood branches and meticulously carved from clay, blending natural aesthetics with fine craftsmanship. Ania is deeply engaged with the unpredictability of her glaze mixtures, embracing the balance between control and chance in the final outcome.

By contrasting the rough, raw texture of stoneware with layered glazes, she draws attention to the interplay between spontaneity and precision, refinement and rawness.

Her work is inspired by Japanese design principles, evoking a sense of harmony with nature and quiet refinement.
