The Connolly Guest Newsletter Series

With Nick Foulkes

The last of the dandies, Nick Foulkes, is a great friend to Connolly, a widely published author and an authority on all things bespoke including watches and cigars.

1. What's new?
New for me is the fact that I now have to wear glasses - which has opened-up a whole new world of retail opportunities for me, and means I can spend time at E. B Meyrowitz, the luxury optician's store in the Royal Arcade.

2. What's your favourite way to waste time?
Undoubtedly playing backgammon while smoking cigars. I can spend hours doing that.

3. What do you tune in to on a car journey?
On a car journey, I tune in to Radio 4. Because everything is repeated and the news comes around every hour with, usually, only imperceptible changes, it gives the impression of time moving very slowly - which means that you arrive at your destination sooner than you expected to.

4. What's your favourite road movie?
It's difficult to choose because there are so many good ones. Herbie Rides Again is an obvious one, as is the original version of Vanishing Point from 1971. But my favourite is probably Convoy, from the days when it was possible to make an entire feature film based on a novelty song.

5. Who is your ideal travelling companion?
Definitely my wife, Alexandra. Not only is she excellent company, but she usually does all the driving, too.

6. What is your favourite view?
Looking across to the Pillars of Hercules from the beach at the Marbella Club.

7. What is the fastest speed at which you have travelled on land?
Probably around 200 mph but, fortunately for all concerned, I wasn't driving. I was in a Bentley with Le Mans legend Derek Bell.

8. If you could invent a motoring accessory, what would it be?
An in-car cigar smoking set that was properly built-in to the car and which would include a humidor, lighter, cutter, ashtray and, as back-up for the lighter, storage and striking areas for extra-long long matches.

9. When in London....
I always go to Davidoff to buy cigars and to see my friend Edward Sahakian.

10. What have you recently seen at Connolly that you wanted to own?
I would give space to almost anything you can find in there but, most recently, I spotted a shearling beanie hat in the window. My wife bought it for me as a surprise.

11. Do you have a Connolly favourite?
One of the things I like about Connolly products is that you have to work pretty hard to destroy them - which is why I still have a green, cable knit cashmere sweater and a linen shirt which both came from the original mews store in the mid 1990s. I still wear them regularly, so I suppose they are favourites.
